Illinois Weather

glingdidit January 31st, 2008

So this week has pretty much been the epitome of Illinois weather.  On Tuesday I was in St. Louis helping a fellow Admissions Counselor on a recruiting trip.  We left the high school we had visited around 12:30 and headed out to lunch.  It was sunny…and a beautiful 68 degrees.  So we park the car…go in for lunch…and come back out just over an hour later.  It’s now about 50 degrees and raining.  Halfway back to Greenville…we get a call from Jared letting us know that there are tornado warnings in the area…and to watch out.  We make it back to Greenville…and get out of the car there only to find that it’s about 40 degrees…and icky outside.  I drive back to our house…get on some comfy jammies to lounge around in…and take a quick nap.  Jared calls around 4:00 and tells me to look out the window.  I do…and see HUGE snowflakes falling down…and they continue to do so for the next hour.  At this point…it’s about 20 degrees outside.  Seriously…Illinois has some crazy weather…but never THIS crazy!  Now I’m eagerly anticipating the huge snowfall that is apparently headed our way.  We’re forcasted to get up to 10 inches tonight…which means one thing….SLEDDING!  Hopefully we’ll finally get some use out of those sleds we bought last year.

The Best Breakfast Food Ever is…

…Donuts!  Well actually in my opinion, they’re one of the best foods period.  I could eat them for lunch…supper…breakfast…brunch…a quick snack.  You get the idea.  Anyway…last week Greenville unleashed upon its citizens a delightful new treat…the “Bakery Nook.”  They specialize in breads, pastries, bagels, cakes, pies…and my favorite…donuts.  They’re slightly pricey (at 85 cents for glazed and a whopping $1.09 for a “fancy”)…but wow….it’s worth it to have fresh donuts available to me from the hours of 8-5 Wednesday-Sunday.  I’ve already been there 3 times…and haven’t had anything that I didn’t love.  This morning a coworker and I made the trek to the town square and I indulged with a delicious powdered sugar…red raspberry…jelly donut.  It was wonderful…and my day has been made much better thanks to it!  So if you come to visit us on a day that it’s open….we just might have to get some donuts.

I’m in love…

…with my husband!  (As if that were ever a question!)  Anyway…horray for getting home for lunch only to find that my dear, sweet hubby had ordered a dozen red roses and Godiva chocolates…and had them delivered to the house.  Just what I needed.

Baby it’s cold outside…

Sorry for the lack of updates lately.  Life is busy and hectic…which leaves little to no time to write blogs.  Jared and I did manage to squeeze in a really good weekend.  We snuck away to do some shopping…where I snagged some good deals on some new tops and some sweet red high heals.  (I’m a sucker for buy one get one free sales at shoe stores!)  We also snuck in a quick meal at Bandana’s BBQ…my personal favorite as far as BBQ in this area goes.  I had a BBQ baked potatoe…which may seem a little crazy…but in all actuality is AMAZING.  You start with an enormous potatoe…fill it with sauce covered pulled pork and pulled beef…then cover it completely in shredded cheddar and bake it some more.  I then like to top it with some sour cream and a bit more sauce.  It looks aweful…but it’s oh-so-yummy!  Follow that up with their side of garlic bread…and a sweet tea…and I’m set!  (Ok…that’s making me reeeaallly hungry just thinking about it.)  The rest of Saturday was spent relaxing…since Jared’s back was hurting.  Sunday was church…and I didnt’ have to sing…so I got to sleep in.  Service was good and afterword’s we got groceries.  I found a great sale on fleece at Wal-Mart too…and got enough to make another big blanket for the basement.  No Cub’s print…but I did find a nice baseball print…with a light blue fleece for the back.  The rest of Sunday was spent being lazy…as Jared put the finishing touches on the kitchen floor.  Monday was crazy with lots of new students getting used to campus…but not nearly as crazy as I expected.  Maybe I’m just getting better at my job!  Last night we got our final installment of fillings.  Nearly $2,000 later…we have learned not to wait 3 (or in Jared’s case 13) years to go back to the dentist.  Thank goodness for flexible spending plans at work!  That brings us to now…which appears to be a typical quiet day at the office…and I’m loving it.  Hopefully I can my office tidied up and prep myself to start calling fall students again.  Good times!

Busy like a Bee

Spring semester is just around the corner…and I really wish it was already here and gone.  The office is buzzing with paperwork and craziness in hopes to have everything ready for the new students arriving on campus this weekend.  It’ll be nice when it’s all said and done.  That being said…we had a nice weekend and actually had some time to relax.  On Friday we went to Edwardsville for some scrumptrulescent food at Red Robin.  It was delicious…as always.  After that we went to see “Sweeny Todd.”  I (a.) loved it but also (b.) thought it was pretty bloody and gross.  Definitely one of those movies where you just don’t talk about it once it’s over.  Probably not going to rent it when it comes out on DVD…but I’m glad we saw it.  Saturday we slept in until like 10:30…which was fantastic!  We both needed it…and it was nice to not have anything to do.  Jared was playing in church at Edwardsville this past weekend…so I rode into town with him that night and shopped for a bit while he was practicing.  I got some fun new pieces for my wardrobe…and a great new neclace.  Yay for things being on sale after the new year.  I met up with Jared for church that night….and we went grocery shopping and ate some delicious burgers at Culver’s.  We got home decent time and just snuggled up and watched tv for a bit.  Sunday morning came early…as always.  I had to sing…and it was pretty good I think.  Not the best…but good.  The rest of the day was devoted to cleaning up around the house and working on some laundry.  Needless to say…we got sidetracked and ended up watching the original “Ghostbusters” on tv.  I forgot how cheesy that movie was!  We went uptown for pizza with Jen and Mac a little bit later…and went back to their house to get caught up on “Amazing Race” episodes.  All in all…a relaxing weekend.

A wicked good time…

So Christmas break has come and gone, but we had one last weekend of fun to finish it out.  Friday night and Saturday morning were spent cleaning like mad-men to get the house back in order after we’d be gone for over a week for Christmas and New Year’s.  So mad-men we were…and the house was spotless by 2:00.  Shortly after, Jared’s family got there and unloaded their things for a fun night in Greenville.  We actually jumped back on the road right away to head into O’Fallon for some delicious BBQ at 17th Street.  Jared had been waiting quite awhile to take everyone there…and hopefully they all liked it.  I know I did!  After that we headed back to Greenville and got to bed at a decent time so we could get up for church in the morning.  Church was good…a great sermon series to start the new year with (“Getting on track…”).  The music went pretty well too…Jared on drums and me with another solo…as usual.  I’m starting to get used to the whole “singing” thing again…but I still get nervous every time.  Anywho…after lunch…the ladies and I all left right away to zip to St. Louis to see “Wicked” at the Fox Theatre.  It was…simply put…amazing.  If you have even a little bit of love for theatre…you should go.  If you fondly remember watching “The Wizard of Oz” year after year…then you must go.  The music and the sets were great…and it was the Fox…which is always a treat.  So that went really well…and afterwords we headed over to the landing to eat at the Spaghetti Factory…another delicious treat.  It was a nice day away with the girls…and when we got back to Greenville…Jared and Steven had nearly completed my new laminate flooring in the kitchen.  I was super pumped for that!  So now my kitchen has gotten a facelift (or rather, floorlift) and I’m really excited about it.  And now we’re back to work.  It’ll be a busy week trying to make sure that all of my incoming students for Spring semester are taken care of…but I’m ready for it!  Adios!
